Preparations for Next Moonwalk Simulations Underway (and Underwater)<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Alongside experts from academia and industry, leaders from NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, will be on hand at the Feb. 25\u201329 PowerSource Global Summit conference in Orlando. Dr. Christyl Johnson<\/a>, Goddard\u2019s deputy center director for technology and research investments, will deliver the conference\u2019s keynote address on Feb. 26, sharing insights on space exploration developments as they relate to the 2024 summit\u2019s theme: \u201cWomen in STEAM Powering the Metaverse.\u201d \u201cSTEAM\u201d adds \u201carts\u201d to the \u201cSTEM\u201d science, technology, engineering, and math acronym.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs NASA embarks toward a sustained human presence on the Moon and onward to Mars, it\u2019s critical that we underpin our efforts with a diverse and inclusive community,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cI look forward to sharing NASA\u2019s latest efforts at the conference and to bringing back ideas and perspectives that will help ensure our exploration reflects humanity\u2019s values and aspirations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Johnson has been a deputy center director at Goddard since 2010. In her current position, she manages the center\u2019s research and development portfolio and formulates the center\u2019s future science mission and technology goals.<\/p>\n

In addition to Johnson\u2019s keynote, NASA Chief Information Officer Jeff Seaton<\/a> will attend and present on a panel, \u201cCybersecurity in a Hackable World,\u201d at 7:30 a.m. EST on Feb. 27.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other Goddard speakers at the conference include Chief Digital Engineer Aaron Comis; research scientist Dr. Bethany Theiling<\/a>; Dr. Evana Gizzi<\/a>, an AI research lead at the center; and systems engineer Matthew Vaerewyck. The four will present an interactive panel, \u201cFrom Vision to Reality,\u201d that showcases Goddard\u2019s digital engineering design capabilities. The panel will be 10:30 a.m. EST on Feb. 26.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dr. Omar Hatamleh, Goddard\u2019s chief adviser for AI and innovation, will participate in a panel discussion, \u201cMedical Technology\u2019s Transformative Impact,\u201d at 11:45 a.m. EST on Feb. 27.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The private sector-led PowerSource Global Summit developed out of a 2016 collaboration that Johnson spearheaded to boost female representation in STEM<\/a> fields.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cContinuing dialogue allows us to move the needle forward to ensure a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible workforce where barriers in STEAM careers cease to exist, particularly for women,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s important for Goddard to participate in summits like PowerSource that convene STEAM professionals to share best practices and learn from one another.\u202fWe need to engage the next generation, the Artemis Generation<\/a>, to build a diverse future workforce for exploration.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the conference\u2019s current form, it allows diverse experts across disciplines to exchange ideas about technology\u2019s influences on society, according to its website. The February conference takes place at World Center Marriott in Orlando.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Goddard is NASA\u2019s premiere space flight complex. The center is home to the nation\u2019s largest organization of scientists, engineers and technologists who build spacecraft, instruments and new technology to study Earth, the Sun, our solar system and the universe.<\/p>\n
