Explore the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/collections\/american-historical-landscapes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">full collection<\/a>\u00a0here.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>George Washington was born in 1732 on his family\u2019s tobacco plantation at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginia.org\/listing\/george-washington-birthplace-national-monument\/4980\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Popes Creek<\/a> in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Three years later, he moved up the Potomac River to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/resource\/g3882m.ct000085\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Little Hunting Creek Plantation<\/a>, a property later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v9oDp7v0uw8\" rel=\"noopener\">renamed Mount Vernon<\/a>. The riverside property, approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of Washington, D.C., was central to the man who became the first U.S. president.<\/p>\n<p>Though the family soon moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia, and resided there for much of his youth, Washington began managing the Mount Vernon property in 1759, soon after his marriage to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/george-washington\/martha-washington\/keys-fact-about-martha-washington\" rel=\"noopener\">Martha Dandridge<\/a>. Washington\u2019s letters make clear that he cherished and longed for this place during his long absences as a surveyor, military commander, and politician\u2014a location he called the most <a href=\"https:\/\/founders.archives.gov\/documents\/Washington\/05-14-02-0337#:~:text=pleasantly\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cpleasantly situated\u201d<\/a> estate in the United States. It was where he helped raise two stepchildren, four step-grandchildren, and an array of crops and livestock. It was also where he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/the-estate-gardens\/the-tombs\" rel=\"noopener\">laid to rest<\/a> in 1799 at the age of 67.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/landsat.gsfc.nasa.gov\/satellites\/landsat-8\/spacecraft-instruments\/operational-land-imager\/\" rel=\"noopener\">OLI<\/a> (Operational Land Imager) on <a href=\"https:\/\/landsat.gsfc.nasa.gov\/satellites\/landsat-8\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Landsat 8<\/a> captured this image of Mount Vernon and its surroundings on August 25, 2024. Its margin is washed by more than ten miles of tidewater; from the bed of which, and the enumerable coves, inlets &#038; small marshes with which it abounds, an inexhaustable fund of rich mud may be drawn as a manure; either to be used seperately, or in a compost.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"display-flex\">\n<div class=\"grid-col-11\">\n<p class=\"blockquote-credit-name line-height-sm margin-0\">\n<p class=\"blockquote-credit-title line-height-sm padding-0 margin-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Toward the end of his life, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/preservation\/maps\/extent-of-washington-s-1793-mount-vernon-land-holdings\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington\u2019s land holdings<\/a> extended across five farms centered on Mount Vernon. The map below, based on one of Washington\u2019s drawings, shows their layout. The Mansion House Farm encompassed Mount Vernon, with Union Farm and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/library\/digitalhistory\/digital-encyclopedia\/article\/dogue-run-farm\" rel=\"noopener\">Dogue Run Farm<\/a> to the west. For instance, he shifted much of his production to wheat and corn and started experimenting with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/library\/digitalhistory\/digital-encyclopedia\/article\/george-washington-and-agriculture\" rel=\"noopener\">seven-year crop rotation<\/a> system and cover crops to better preserve the health of his soil after realizing that growing tobacco depleted its fertility.<\/p>\n<p>While most crops were raised at the outlying farms, Mount Vernon\u2019s gardens were showcases for visitors and laboratories for experimentation. The showy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/library\/digitalhistory\/digital-encyclopedia\/article\/upper-garden\" rel=\"noopener\">upper garden<\/a> was a formal garden near the mansion with carefully trimmed dwarf boxwood hedges and a heated greenhouse with lemons, oranges, and rare plants.<\/p>\n<p>Closer to the river was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/the-estate-gardens\/location\/lower-garden\" rel=\"noopener\">lower garden<\/a>, a kitchen garden brimming with vegetables, and a small garden that Washington called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/the-estate-gardens\/gardens-landscapes\/botanical-garden\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cmy botanick garden,\u201d<\/a> where he spent much of his time experimenting with new varieties. Even closer to the river was the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/the-estate-gardens\/location\/fruit-garden-nursery\" rel=\"noopener\">fruit garden<\/a>, an experimental orchard where the estate raised pears, cherries, peaches, and apples. Species such as oak, hickory, and heath shrubs dominated the forests in Washington\u2019s time. Dozens of the same plant species from that period are still found on the estate\u2019s forests in modern times, though large numbers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/4034007\" rel=\"noopener\">non-native species<\/a> have established themselves as well.<\/p>\n<p>One of the larger open spaces visible in the Landsat image above is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/gwmp\/learn\/historyculture\/fort-hunt-history-and-culture.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Hunt Park<\/a>. Once part of Washington\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ahsgardening.org\/about-river-farm\/history\/\" rel=\"noopener\">River Farm<\/a>, Fort Hunt was constructed in 1897 to bolster Washington D.C.\u2019s defenses during a period of heightened tensions with Spain. Across the Potomac River stands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/fowa\/index.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Washington Park<\/a>, home to ruins of a fort that was used to defend the city during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>Across the river in Maryland lies another property with a connection to George and Martha Washington. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accokeek.org\/national-colonial-farm\" rel=\"noopener\">National Colonial Farm<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/preservation\/viewshed\/easements\" rel=\"noopener\">Piscataway Park<\/a>\u00a0was established in 1958 to preserve the couple\u2019s beloved views across the Potomac. Today, National Colonial Farm is a living farm museum and features several 18th-century heirloom varieties of herbs, flowers, and vegetables, including <a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopediavirginia.org\/entries\/tobacco-in-colonial-virginia\/#:~:text=Orinoco\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cOrinoco\u201d tobacco<\/a>, red May wheat, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/the-estate-gardens\/gardens-landscapes\/plant-finder\/item\/virginia-white-gourdseed-corn\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia white gourdseed corn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><em>NASA Earth Observatory images by Michala Garrison, using Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey.
