Its surface often appears dark, but each spring and summer it transforms into a striking expanse of swirling turquoise. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pace.oceansciences.org\/oci.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">OCI<\/a>\u00a0(Ocean Color Instrument) on NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/pace\/\" rel=\"noopener\">PACE<\/a>\u00a0(Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) satellite captured this image (above) of the colorful waters on June 22, 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The turquoise color is likely caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/coccolithophores\/\" rel=\"noopener\">coccolithophores<\/a>, a type of phytoplankton covered with calcium carbonate plates that can give surface waters a milky-blue appearance. These types of phytoplankton tend to dominate in late spring and early summer. Other times of the year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montereybayaquarium.org\/animals\/animals-a-to-z\/diatoms\" rel=\"noopener\">diatoms<\/a>\u2014a type of microscopic algae with silica shells\u2014can become more prevalent, and they <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/turquoise-swirls-in-the-black-sea-90318\/#:~:text=Other%20types%20of%20phytoplankton%20can%20look%20much%20different%20in%20satellite%20imagery.%20%E2%80%9CIt%E2%80%99s%20important%20to%20remember%20that%20not%20all%20phytoplankton%20blooms%20make%20the%20water%20brighter%2C%E2%80%9D%20Kuring%20said.%20%E2%80%9CDiatoms%2C%20which%20also%20bloom%20in%20the%20Black%20Sea%2C%20tend%20to%20darken%20water%20more%20than%20they%20brighten%20it.%E2%80%9D\" rel=\"noopener\">tend to darken<\/a> the water rather than brighten it. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Bosphorus, the narrow strait running through Istanbul that connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, also turned turquoise. An astronaut aboard the International Space Station photographed the strait on May 27, 2026 (below), about a month before the PACE image, capturing blooming phytoplankton as it traced currents on both sides of the waterway. This makes remote sensing a useful tool for researchers studying bloom dynamics in regions where direct sampling is limited. Beyond their visibility, these blooms also <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/carbon-eaters-on-the-black-sea-78705\/\" rel=\"noopener\">contribute to the ocean\u2019s carbon cycle<\/a>. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed.
