Although most regions saw average or above-average precipitation in fall and early winter, warmer temperatures meant that much of it fell as rain. The result has been an unusually low snowpack for this time of year, constituting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drought.gov\/what-is-drought\/snow-drought\" rel=\"noopener\">snow drought<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This image, acquired with the <a href=\"https:\/\/modis.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener\">MODIS<\/a>\u00a0(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/terra\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Terra<\/a>\u00a0satellite, provides a wide view of meager western snow cover on January 15. On that day, measurements derived from satellite observations showed that snow blanketed <a href=\"https:\/\/nsidc.org\/snow-today\/snow-viewer\" rel=\"noopener\">142,700 square miles<\/a> (369,700 square kilometers) of the west. That\u2019s the lowest coverage for that date in the MODIS record dating back to 2001 and less than one-third of the median. In early January, the National Integrated Drought Information System <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drought.gov\/drought-status-updates\/snow-drought-current-conditions-and-impacts-west-2026-01-08\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that snow drought, defined as SWE below the 20th percentile for a given date, was most acute in Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. At least one ground-based monitoring station in every major western watershed recorded the lowest SWE in at least 20 years on January 26, according to data published by the USDA <a href=\"https:\/\/nwcc-apps.sc.egov.usda.gov\/imap\/#version=2&#038;elements=&#038;networks=!&#038;states=!&#038;counties=!&#038;hucs=&#038;minElevation=&#038;maxElevation=&#038;elementSelectType=any&#038;activeOnly=true&#038;activeForecastPointsOnly=false&#038;hucLabels=false&#038;hucIdLabels=false&#038;hucParameterLabels=true&#038;stationLabels=&#038;overlays=&#038;hucOverlays=2&#038;basinOpacity=75&#038;basinNoDataOpacity=25&#038;basemapOpacity=100&#038;maskOpacity=0&#038;mode=data&#038;openSections=dataElement,parameter,date,basin,options,elements,location,networks&#038;controlsOpen=true&#038;popup=&#038;popupMulti=&#038;popupBasin=&#038;base=esriNgwm&#038;displayType=station&#038;basinType=6&#038;dataElement=WTEQ&#038;depth=-2&#038;parameter=RECORDS&#038;frequency=DAILY&#038;duration=I&#038;customDuration=&#038;dayPart=E&#038;monthPart=E&#038;forecastPubDay=1&#038;forecastExceedance=50&#038;useMixedPast=true&#038;seqColor=1&#038;divColor=7&#038;scaleType=D&#038;scaleMin=&#038;scaleMax=&#038;referencePeriodType=POR&#038;referenceBegin=1991&#038;referenceEnd=2020&#038;minimumYears=20&#038;hucAssociations=true&#038;relativeDate=-1&#038;lat=39.644&#038;lon=-105.097&#038;zoom=4.5\" rel=\"noopener\">Natural Resources Conservation Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the preceding few months were very wet and warm across the West. For the water year beginning on October 1, 2025, many regions saw average or above-average <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcs.usda.gov\/programs-initiatives\/sswsf-snow-survey-and-water-supply-forecasting-program\/snowpack-and#:~:text=West%20wide%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%20Snow%20Water%20Equivalent%20Index%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%20Water%20Year%20Precipitation%20Index\" rel=\"noopener\">precipitation<\/a>. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drought.gov\/drought-status-updates\/drought-status-update-intermountain-west-2026-01-15\" rel=\"noopener\">record warmth<\/a> across a <a href=\"https:\/\/weatherwest.com\/archives\/43686\" rel=\"noopener\">vast expanse<\/a> of the region meant that much of that precipitation fell as rain rather than snow. A December 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/pacific-moisture-drenches-the-u-s-northwest\/\" rel=\"noopener\">atmospheric river<\/a> in the Pacific Northwest was one such warm precipitation event.<\/p>\n<p>One nuance in the snow deficit picture can be found in the Southern Sierra and Northern Rockies, where more precipitation has fallen as snow than rain on the lofty peaks. SWE levels stood above average at some <a href=\"https:\/\/weatherwest.com\/archives\/43686#:~:text=very%20high%20elevations\" rel=\"noopener\">high-elevation locations<\/a> but were low farther downslope. \u201cThis is a classic climate-change, temperature-driven, elevationally dependent snowpack deficit,\u201d said Daniel Swain, climate scientist at the California Institute for Water Resources, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n744hgU4hTU\" rel=\"noopener\">presentation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Precipitation falling as rain tends to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/water-science-school\/science\/runoff-surface-and-overland-water-runoff\" rel=\"noopener\">run off<\/a> before it can recharge reservoirs and groundwater. On the other hand, winter snowpack that melts in the spring can produce a more metered, sustained water supply. The health of the mountain snowpack has implications for ecosystems, wildfire dynamics, and water availability for agriculture and other uses during drier times of the year.<\/p>\n<p>There is still a lot of winter remaining, and February and March can bring significant amounts of snow. But snowfall in the coming months may not be able to make up for existing deficits.
