The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) snapped a close-up of the comet, while the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) orbiter captured ultraviolet images and the Perseverance rover caught a faint glimpse as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Imagery from MRO will allow scientists to better estimate the comet\u2019s size, and MAVEN\u2019s images are unique among all observations this year in determining the chemical makeup of the comet and how much water vapor is released as the Sun warms the comet. These details will help scientists better understand the past, present, and future of this object.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HiRISE<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The comet will be at its closest approach to Earth on Friday, Dec. 19. On Oct. 2, MRO observed <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/comets\/3i-atlas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3I\/ATLAS<\/a> from 19 million miles (30 million kilometers) away, with one of the closest views that any NASA spacecraft or Earth-based telescopes are expected to get.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The orbiter\u2019s team viewed the comet with a camera called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uahirise.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HiRISE<\/a> (the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment), which normally points at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers-and-facilities\/jpl\/celebrate-mars-reconnaissance-orbiters-views-from-above\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Martian surface<\/a>. By rotating, MRO can point HiRISE at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/earth-moon-as-seen-from-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">celestial objects<\/a> as well \u2014 a technique used in 2014, when HiRISE joined MAVEN in studying another comet, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/mars-orbiter-image-shows-comet-nucleus-is-small\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Siding Spring<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Captured at a scale of roughly 19 miles (30 kilometers) per pixel, 3I\/ATLAS looks like a pixelated white ball on the HiRISE imagery. More study also may reveal the size and color of particles within its coma.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of MRO\u2019s biggest contributions to NASA\u2019s work on Mars has been watching surface phenomena that only HiRISE can see,\u201d said MRO\u2019s project scientist Leslie Tamppari of NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. \u201cThis is one of those occasions where we get to study a passing space object as well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"nasa-gb-align-center nasa-button-link padding-y-1 padding-x-0 hds-module aligncenter wp-block-nasa-blocks-related-link\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/eyes.nasa.gov\/apps\/solar-system\/#\/c_2025_n1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"button-primary button-primary-md link-external-true\" aria-label=\"Follow 3I\/ATLAS\u2019 Journey\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t<span class=\"line-height-alt-1\">Follow 3I\/ATLAS\u2019 Journey<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t<svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><circle class=\"button-primary-circle\" cx=\"16\" cy=\"16\" r=\"16\"><\/circle><path d=\"M8 16.956h12.604l-3.844 4.106 1.252 1.338L24 16l-5.988-6.4-1.252 1.338 3.844 4.106H8v1.912z\" class=\"color-spacesuit-white\"><\/path><\/svg><br \/>\n\t<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MAVEN\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Over the course of 10 days starting Sept. 27, <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.us\/v3\/__https:\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/maven\/__;!!PvBDto6Hs4WbVuu7!OFxcUOUneVTYr2HxXGiiRJlDIYsu1T14bAgxerc5_U06r6JuBSZfKhVKtK9Wj79p_gSPhlFAZnnEEcMDpCBLC4OHJQnETfqIcwXc%24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MAVEN<\/a> captured 3I\/ATLAS in two unique ways with its Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) camera. First, IUVS took multiple images of the comet in several wavelengths, much like using various filters on a camera. Then it snapped high-resolution UV images to identify the hydrogen coming from 3I\/ATLAS. Studying a combination of these images, scientists can identify a variety of molecules and better understand the comet\u2019s composition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe images MAVEN captured truly are incredible,\u201d said Shannon Curry, MAVEN\u2019s principal investigator and research scientist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder. \u201cThe detections we are seeing are significant, and we have only scraped the surface of our analysis.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The IUVS data also offers an estimated upper limit of the comet\u2019s ratio of deuterium (a heavy isotope of hydrogen) to regular hydrogen, a tracer of the comet\u2019s origin and evolution. When the comet was at its closest to Mars, the team used more sensitive channels of IUVS to map different atoms and molecules in the comet\u2019s coma, such as hydrogen and hydroxyl. Further study of the comet\u2019s chemical makeup could reveal more about its origins and evolution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a lot of adrenaline when we saw what we\u2019d captured,\u201d said MAVEN\u2019s deputy principal investigator, Justin Deighan, a LASP scientist and the lead on the mission\u2019s comet 3I\/ATLAS observations. \u201cEvery measurement we make of this comet helps to open up a new understanding of interstellar objects.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"hds-media hds-module wp-block-image\">\n<div class=\"margin-left-auto margin-right-auto nasa-block-align-inline\">\n<div class=\"hds-media-wrapper margin-left-auto margin-right-auto\">\n<figure class=\"hds-media-inner hds-cover-wrapper hds-media-ratio-fit \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/e2-m2020-3iatlas-clean.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/e2-m2020-3iatlas-clean.gif?w=2000\" class=\"attachment-2048x2048 size-2048x2048\" alt=\"A predominantly black view of space is dotted with stars, seen as short white streaks, in an animated image that consists of two observations. On Oct. 4, the comet appeared as a faint smudge to the rover\u2019s Mastcam-Z camera. The exposure had to be exceptionally long to detect such a faint object. Unlike telescopes that track objects as they move, Mastcam-Z is fixed in place during long exposures. This technique produces star trails that appear as streaks in the sky, though the comet itself is barely perceptible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More about MRO, MAVEN, Perseverance<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>A division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, JPL manages MRO for NASA\u2019s Science Mission Directorate in Washington as part of NASA\u2019s Mars Exploration Program portfolio.
