Estas misiones nos ayudar\u00e1n a garantizar la seguridad y la resiliencia de nuestro mundo interconectado\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>La <a href=\"https:\/\/ciencia.nasa.gov\/imap-de-la-nasa\/\" rel=\"noopener\">misi\u00f3n IMAP<\/a> trazar\u00e1 los l\u00edmites de la heliosfera, una burbuja inflada por el viento solar que protege nuestro sistema solar de los rayos c\u00f3smicos gal\u00e1cticos. Esta es una protecci\u00f3n clave que contribuye a que nuestro planeta sea habitable. Al estudiar la geocorona \u2014el brillo ultravioleta que emite la exosfera cuando la luz del sol la ilumina\u2014 la misi\u00f3n Carruthers revelar\u00e1 c\u00f3mo la exosfera responde a las tormentas solares y c\u00f3mo cambia con las estaciones. La misi\u00f3n se basa en el legado del primer instrumento que captur\u00f3 im\u00e1genes de la geocorona, el cual viaj\u00f3 a la Luna a bordo de Apolo 16 y fue construido y dise\u00f1ado por el cient\u00edfico, inventor, ingeniero y educador Dr. George Carruthers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLa misi\u00f3n Carruthers nos mostrar\u00e1 c\u00f3mo funciona la exosfera y nos ayudar\u00e1 a mejorar nuestra capacidad para predecir los efectos de la actividad solar aqu\u00ed en la Tierra\u201d, dijo Lara Waldrop, investigadora principal de la misi\u00f3n en la Universidad de Illinois en Urbana-Champaign.<\/p>\n<p>La nave SWFO-L1 de la NOAA, la primera de su tipo, est\u00e1 dise\u00f1ada para ser un observatorio de meteorolog\u00eda espacial operativo a tiempo completo. Al vigilar la actividad solar y las condiciones espaciales cerca de la Tierra las 24 horas del d\u00eda, los 7 d\u00edas de la semana, sin interrupciones ni obstrucciones, SWFO-L1 proporcionar\u00e1 pron\u00f3sticos de meteorolog\u00eda espacial m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidos y precisos que nunca.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSe trata del primero de una nueva generaci\u00f3n de observatorios de meteorolog\u00eda espacial de la NOAA dedicados a operaciones ininterrumpidas, que trabajar\u00e1n para evitar lagunas en la continuidad. Las observaciones en tiempo real de SWFO-L1 proporcionar\u00e1n a los operadores los datos fiables necesarios para emitir alertas tempranas, de modo que los responsables de la toma de decisiones puedan actuar con antelaci\u00f3n para proteger las infraestructuras vitales, los intereses econ\u00f3micos y la seguridad nacional en la Tierra y en el espacio. Se trata de proteger a la sociedad contra los peligros de la meteorolog\u00eda espacial\u201d, dijo Richard Ullman, subdirector de la Oficina de Observaciones de la Meteorolog\u00eda Espacial de la NOAA<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siguientes pasos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En las horas posteriores al lanzamiento, las tres naves espaciales se desplegaron desde el cohete con \u00e9xito y enviaron se\u00f1ales a la Tierra para confirmar que est\u00e1n activas y funcionando correctamente.<\/p>\n<p>Durante los pr\u00f3ximos meses, los sat\u00e9lites se dirigir\u00e1n a su destino, un lugar situado entre la Tierra y el Sol, a unos 1,6 millones de kil\u00f3metros de la Tierra, denominado punto de Lagrange 1 (L1). Se espera que lleguen en enero y, una vez completadas las comprobaciones y calibraciones de sus instrumentos, comiencen sus misiones para comprender mejor la meteorolog\u00eda espacial y proteger a la humanidad.<\/p>\n<p>David McComas, de la Universidad de Princeton, dirige la misi\u00f3n IMAP con un equipo internacional formado por 27 instituciones asociadas. El Laboratorio de F\u00edsica Aplicada de la Universidad Johns Hopkins, ubicado en Laurel, Maryland, construy\u00f3 la nave espacial y operar\u00e1 la misi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>La misi\u00f3n del Observatorio Carruthers de la Geocorona est\u00e1 dirigida por Lara Waldrop, de la Universidad de Illinois Urbana-Champaign. La ejecuci\u00f3n de la misi\u00f3n est\u00e1 a cargo del Laboratorio de Ciencias Espaciales de la Universidad de California, Berkeley, que tambi\u00e9n dise\u00f1\u00f3 y construy\u00f3 los dos generadores de im\u00e1genes ultravioletas.
