As the aviation industry works to design air taxis and other new electric aircraft, there\u2019s\u00a0a growing need to understand how the materials behave. That\u2019s why\u00a0NASA is investigating potential air taxi materials and designs to best protect passengers in the event of a crash.<\/p>\n

On June 26, 2025, at NASA\u2019s\u00a0Langley Research Center\u00a0in Hampton, Virginia, researchers dropped a full-scale\u00a0aircraft\u00a0body<\/a> modeled after an air taxi\u00a0from a tall steel structure, known as a gantry.<\/p>\n

The NASA researchers behind this test and a previous\u00a0one\u00a0in late 2022<\/a>\u00a0investigated materials that best absorb impact forces, generating data that will enable manufacturers to design safer\u00a0advanced\u00a0air mobility<\/a>\u00a0aircraft.<\/p>\n
