NASA pilot Joe Walker sits in the pilot\u2019s platform of the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle<\/a> (LLRV) number 1 on Oct. 30, 1964. The\u00a0LLRV and its successor the\u00a0Lunar Landing Training Vehicle<\/a>\u00a0(LLTV) provided the training tool to simulate the final 200 feet of the descent to the Moon\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n

The LLRVs, humorously referred to as flying bedsteads, were used by NASA\u2019s Flight Research Center, now NASA\u2019s Armstrong Flight Research Center<\/a> in California, to study and analyze piloting techniques needed to fly and land the Apollo lunar module in the moon\u2019s airless environment.<\/p>\n
