NASA, Boeing, and ULA (United Launch Alliance) officials discussed final prelaunch details to send two astronauts aboard Boeing\u2019s Starliner spacecraft to the International Space Station as the first crewed flight for Starliner. The prelaunch news conference <\/span>finished at NASA\u2019s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to have a whole new adventure. This is very much a part of our exploration of space and what I call the \u2018golden age of space exploration,\u2019\u201d said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. \u201cIt\u2019s a historical day. It\u2019s a wonderful day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials provided updates to the countdown of the 10:34 p.m. EDT Monday, May 6, launch of NASA astronauts <\/span>Butch Wilmore<\/span><\/a>, commander, and <\/span>Suni Williams<\/span><\/a>, pilot, on the Starliner spacecraft as part of <\/span>NASA\u2019s Boeing Crew Flight Test<\/span><\/a> mission. The crew is set to dock at the space station on Wednesday, May 8,<\/span> for about a week-long stay before returning to Earth with a <\/span>parachute and airbag-assisted landing<\/span><\/a> in the southwestern United States.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to bring Starliner and a United launch Alliance Atlas vehicle online,\u201d said Steve Stich, manager, NASA\u2019s Commercial Crew Program. \u201cWe have been striving for commercial crew to have two independent space transportation systems. That\u2019s been our goal from commercial crew since its inception, and we\u2019re very close to reaching that goal with the launch on Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian Cizek, launch weather officer with the 45th Weather Squadron, predicts a <\/span>95%<\/span> chance of favorable weather conditions for launch, with the cumulus cloud rule <\/span>being the primary weather concern.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t be more proud of this team. We\u2019re at peak performance right now and we are really excited to execute this launch. We\u2019re ready to go,\u201d said Mark Nappi, vice president and program manager, Commercial Crew Program, Boeing.<\/p>\n
